Well.

Right. So. Borat's on. So that's good. First of all. Not seen it before. So i'm having trouble paying attention to this post. But now it's a commercial so I'll focus. Earlier, I was watching Craig Ferguson and reading humor articles on the New Yorker site. It was ironic? An now I sound like a pompous comedy asshole. So it was just funny. And then I watched Iron and Wine on Austin City Limits. And now I sound like a bit of a music snob. Which I am, I guess. And now I'm watching Borat. And now you're going to watch this, which I found on Jason Heath's Double Bass Blog. It's really sick. Also, I had a gig tonight, so that was good. Bye.

Harmonica Ensemble? Yup.

I know, it's been a long time. Sorry. I was doing stuff. So, my grood friend Miku gave me a really nice harmonica for graduation, and a few months back I was youtubing different harmonica things. The one harmonica player that everyone should check out is Howard Levy--he used to play with the Flecktones, and actually is getting back together with them for a European tour. That should be enough to warrant investigation, but he's also done a bunch of other stuff as well. Impressive! I'm not going to show you a video of him, though. I'm gonna subject you to this. Summat BIG harmonicas.

Happy Birthday, Ma!

Well, this isn't quite her kind of music...but it's still beautiful. A twofer today.
First, a Chet Atkins song which I remember hearing a long long time ago. What a beast.

Next, one of my favorite duos, who I also remember hearing a long time ago. Jerry Garcia and David Grisman made a record called Not For Kids Only. I remember listening to this is Dad's car when we were going someplace. Anyway, this here is a Grateful Dead song, but in a slightly different format. My two favorite things about this are the counter rhythm David does, and the fact that the percussionist is playing fiddle. Oh man. I would've loved to have been at this concert.

Turnips

I would like to take this opportunity to share, not music, but a recipe. Behold, some turnips.
2 turnips. (Serves 2)
Peel, cut into smallish pieces. Use as dull a knife as possible. Try to break the handle off. They taste better that way, trust me. After first knife is broken, use a table knife.
Boil, 20-25 minutes. Stir occasionally. Towards end of boiling, mash 'em up a bit. Use a spatula.
Drain.
Mash a bit more.
Put in, I dunno, 1/4 cup of butter. Let it melt, mix it around.
Put in a bit of half and half and just enough brown sugar. You'll know.
Mix it around. Drain most of the liquids out.
Serve as soon as possible, otherwise, cover and put in a warm oven.
Directly before eating, or perhaps after a couple bites, put on some garlic pepper salt.

It must be sideways.

Eat it with a spoon. Tastes best around 2:06 AM.

Enjoy.

Not music, but...

Thought this was funny. I've been on a bit of a train kick today, so I was making the rounds of wikipedia, and somebody's been having a good old time with the monorail entry.

Bears

Lyle Lovett. Sam Bush. Yes. Also, through some researching, I discovered that the bassist played on a couple of my favorite Jerry Douglas records, The Best Kept Secret and Restless on the Farm. The latter is particularly good music for driving. So...good stuff.

Dave Matthews Band + Flecktones = Effin Madness.

Found this amazing set of videos this morning. Dave Matthews band with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones playing an epic rendition of #41. This is half of my dream concert. (The other half involves Nickel Creek and John Mayer. Not necessarily together.) Maybe Lyle Lovett should be the opener. He seems to have a new record out entitled Natural Forces, and the 30-second snippets sound pretty good. Anyway, this is in 4 parts, so bear with it. Dig.

Niyaz

Stumbled on this the other day. The first song that plays when you open the page is real groovy in my opinion. This is the website of a group called Niyaz, which is pretty much world music mixed with chilled out dance music--"A 21st century global trance tradition." Based in Middle Eastern folk music, it has a modernized feel to it while retaining some of the funky qualities of Persian, Turkish, and Iranian music. I dig it. Enjoy.

Moose

Anybody know of a restaurant in Chicago (or anywhere) that serves it? Just curious. So my roommate was in a band back in California called Roswick. They're killin', check out the second song especially. (David wrote it.) Also, I posted this on facebook yesterday, but people probably missed it. It's pretty much my favorite donkey.

Summat nice greasy blues muzack

This video was up a couple years ago, and then I think they took it down. But I found another version of it, and it made me really happy. So here it is...James Taylor's Steamroller Blues.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfzMLRzH2yw

As an end of the weekend bonus, I'll share this one as well. Observe ol' Bo Diddley's athleticism around 2:45. Very impressive.

Today, I was trying to look up sus chords on wikipedia.

This is what I found.

Nickel Creek Day

Of course. I've seen them a couple times, and it was ridiculous. They'd been playing forever, here's a really early video I found of them. (I can't embed it, sorry.) And here's a more recent one. I love this...

God, I miss them.

A New Direction

Taking the blog in a new direction. Or perhaps just a direction, period. Hadn't really been going anywhere, had it? I think what I'm going to do every couple days is post a really great, or kindof alright, song/video or whatever as well as a bit of background on how I found it, what I think of it, etc. We'll start this of with a band called Poutníci. They are a Czech bluegrass band. I think it's really interesting that bluegrass found it's way to the Czech republic at all, and even more so that it has become fairly popular and the people have taken it and kept some parts similar to it's roots, and then added Czech components to it, as well. I was just reading the Wikipedia article on Czech music in general, and one thing led to another. I found this video of them playing Wayfaring Stranger, which I think is a really beautiful song. One of my favorite versions of it is in this video by Mike Marshall, who plays it on mandocello. Anyway, here it is, let me know what you think. More soon.

Thoughts

Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker is a bit strange in alphabetical order. I think I should probably read the AP Theory book this week. I wish I understood pre-calc. I wish my teachers would put grades in faster. I think some meditation might be in order. It would be awful to be sick for prom. A paradox: The more I realistically prepare myself for life, the worse I do in school. I shan't be singing in public again. I'm not sure if I would have liked to have done a senior recital or not. Goats are adorable. I have yet to order flowers. Water is a wonder, and I still haven't ordered that damn nalgene cap. They should make those out of nalgene too. Except then they wouldn't bend. I've just finished the Nutcracker Suite, now for some Richard Thompson. An excellent guitarist. I love playing in a venue in which you've seen a master play. Also, goat farms. If? Perhaps. Does it matter? Of course not. When will it end? Did it ever start? I see. Can you? Some can't. I'd rather lose my vision than my hearing. I still have some may basket things left, but they've been sitting out, so I think I'll throw them away. I wish I could see the future, but I'm sure I don't want to. It'll all work out...Don't you worry about a thing, 'cause every little thing is gonna be alright. Yup.

3.29.2009

Aw, Shucks.

And I mean that in the best way possible. I had an incredible day. First of all, I had pancakes for breakfast. So, that was good enough. Did some homework for a while, that was kinda lame, but that was definitely the worst part of the day. After a decent lunch of peanut butter n' honey on bread, I picked Heather up and we went to the art center to see American Gothic, as well as all the other art. Parking was ridiculous, and I thought we were going to have to park all the way down by Greenwood Pond, but Heather had a hunch that we could eventually get a good spot if we just went up and drove around and around the lot. Sure enough, a truck was pulling out of a spot just as we got up there, so I snagged it. Good times. When we got inside, the line was huge, a guy I talked to later told me it was about an hour long to see American Gothic. So, we went in the other entrance to the art and had a look at some of the other art. I felt smarter than I was last time, because I was catching all these nuances and subliminal messages and stuff in the art. It was really cool. So eventually we got back around and just came at American Gothic from the other side. We didn't get to go right up to it and have a good hard look, but we'd both seen it before, and we figured with all the other Grant Wood art we saw, it was pretty close to good enough. Like I said, some really great, interesting stuff in there. Too bad it's gone after tomorrow. I guess that just means there will be new stuff though, which is cool.
So after the art center, I took Heather back home and headed over to Jason's for a bit of a rehearsal before the gig. We worked out a bunch of music and stuff. It was pretty exhausting, but a good time, as usual, was had by all. After that, we put on some music, namely the Dry Cleaner from Des Moines by Joni Mitchell, which we hope to do at some point later on. While it was at a really awesome part, my dad called and told me that the mail came and I've been accepted at DePaul.

I've been accepted at DePaul.

YEEAAHHH!! And they're giving me a boatload of money. So that's excellent. Definitely the high point of the day. Ummmm after we'd stuffed everything into our cars, we headed down to Java Joes. I got a parking spot directly in front of it. It was nuts. We set up, got everything ready, it was great. I don't even know what to say about the show. I'll have to have a separate post on that. Anyway, afterwards I found out that Heather had gotten a guitar, so that'll be sweet. Also, Rob won a Wii at the spring carnival thing at his school, so that's going to be lots of fun too. Not that I'm going to have time to play it ever, haha...So yeah, we got everything packed up and headed our separate ways. I stopped at home to drop off my bass, then Travis and I met at Arby's for some more food. Good time. Real tasty. Then I went home and sliced up and edited the recording from the show, which I reckon I could burn for ya if you want a copy, so let me know. Just finished that now, pretty pleased with it. Anyway, I think I'm going to hit the sack. I'll write about the show some other time. Night, thanks everybody. :-)

May I suggest that you listen to Chris Thile's "Deceiver" album?

Seems about right this time of the day. And of the week. This time of the month. And of the year. Seems about right this year.

Dan is hungryish.

So, my mom made this really good curry chicken thing for dinner, and I ate like a breast and a half, but I'm still craving some sweets or something. So I have a few question for the general public who may know:
a.) Could the fine folks at Dairy Queen hypothetically make me a Oreo and Butterfinger Blizzard, and
b.) Would my 50c coupon count towards it?
c.) Might it be a wiser idea to purchase a tub of ice cream, a box of Oreos, and some Butterfingers, so as to make a significantly larger blizzard than would be obtainable for less than $5 at DQ?
d.) Not a question, but I've just realized that my Blizzard of the Month Freequency card only has 4 punches. I though I had more than that. Hmm.
e.) Upon closer inspection, it has been discovered that previously mention card does in fact have 6 punches, and I had misread it because the fifth punch is not precisely in the center of the circle, leaving the "5" still visible, leading me to assume that it was not in fact punched at all.

In non artificial chocolate and sugar related news, I called the hotel I was at last weekend and they do not have my cell phone charger. So I'm not sure what to do now. I will be with out a cell phone for an undeterminable period of time. I thank you for your patience.

1.30.2009

Well, that was silly.

What a week. Hot damn. Anyway, now that that's over, I'd like to share a couple things with you. First of all: my favorite songs I discovered this week. In no particular order:

1. Her Morning Elegance, by Oren Lavie. I was first introduced to this song by Dark Roasted Blend, one of my favorite blogs. They called the music video one of the most beautiful music videos ever made. It's up there. I'd definitely recommend checking it out. It's on youtube.

2. If I Had a Boat, by Lyle Lovett. Just a damn good song. I was getting into a bit of a country mood later in the week, so I made a Lyle Lovett station on Pandora, and this came on, and I like it very much. The video is ridiculous, Lovett has a terrible haircut. Not recommended. Do find the song on tinysong or skreemr or something.

3. Sitting Here in Limbo, by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. It's from the Grateful Dawg, soundtrack. Only place I could find it was iTunes. Good stuff.

Finally, I saw found this just now. I think it's pretty funny. It is a humor article, so keep that in mind. It'd just be dumb if you didn't.

Happy New Year!

Well, here it is, 2009. 2008 was alright I guess. I remember feeling euphoric exactly one time. The rest wasn't bad though. We all made it, didn't we? Hope you had a good evening just there. I myself spent the night with several of my very favorite people in the whole damn world, doing my favorite stuff. Started out at Cafe Su playing a gig with Pravis and Viku, made a bit of cash money, went home to drop my whatsit off, went to pick up just about my very favorite person in the world, went with her to Matt's shindig, that was fun, great buncha people there, went back to Heather's, hang out with her and Lynda and Jenna and Kyle 'til about one, felt really hyper all of a sudden, had some chocolate and pretzels, and decided to write another of of these stream-of-consciousness-type posts. So, there you are. I guess I haven't really made resolutions so much as told myself to do stuff, and I'll try to follow that as much as I can. I am going to wear my retainer more this year, I think 5 out of 7 nights of the week, with no two consecutive nights off. It was getting bad towards the end of the year there. I hope to ride my bike more this year. After college auditions, when it warms up, I won't be needing to haul my bass back and forth from school every day, so I'll do some then. Heather and I are planning on this big 30 mile tour of Des Moines. Should be pretty cool. I'd question if we'd be able to do it, but I did 50 miles one day a few years ago, so I think we'll be alright. Especially if she gets a new bike. I've also decided to start tagging people in these notes. I hope to get more sleep this year. I'm going to try to swear less. That's about it for the resolutions, I guess.  These pretzels are good. I've recently been getting more into tasting fine chocolates. I wish I had more money. I hope all these trios and combos and bands and everything work out. I have fun with all of them-Saturn V, Zen Distortion, Saturn V Trio, Joey, when I get to play with them, and everybody else. It's weird to think that this time next year, I'll be halfway through my first year of college. This growing up thing sure is nuts, isn't it? I do wish the drinking age was 18. Feels kind of silly drinking sparkling grape juice on New Years eve. I mean, not that I'm 18 anyway, it's just...the powers at be would be more likely to let me have a bit of something. Hope stuff works out better for Wuli this year. My phone must be a cat, I think. It's pretty close to shot, though. I've killed it at least 5 or 6 times...getting up there. I had been hot earlier, but now I'm cold. I need to work on time management and whatnot. If you receive a check on December 31st 2008 but don't cash it until January 1st or 2nd 2009, does it go on your tax return for 08 or 09? Do you remember the old elementary school phrase "I after E except after C"? Do you remember the old elementary school? I think it would be a bummer, but an interesting bummer to work on New Year's eve. They should take a break from the law and stuff for a couple hours between like 11 and 1. But not tell anybody. So it wouldn't be complete mayhem, but the coppers could have the night off. Did you hear about that one time? Yeah, me neither. I think I'm going to have more chocolate. Goodnight. Good day. Good year.

12.30.2008

Current Position: 10:39/London: 1:39/Chicago:7:39

Well, my iPod lasted me to now, which I do believe signifies that I simply must obtain a new one sometime in the future. We are at some point south of Greenland, and are expected to arrive in Chicago in about 5 more hours. Then we have a five hour layover, and be home by 7, at which point I will obtain some apple cider. The bust ride to the airport was pretty dull, lots of sleeping happened. We got to the airport and hung out and had breakfast for a while. I wanted a PB+Honey on a cinnamon raisin bagel, but they didn't have any peanut butter, so I had ham and cheese on a plain. Then I went to the shop and got an Oasis and a Lilt. Tasty. Also had a caramel mocha at Starbucks. Wanted cider, but they didn't have it. On the plane, I wanted root beer, but they didn't have any so I had Pepsi. It has been a 2nd choice day so far aha. We had Penne pasta with Pesto chichen for lunch on the plane. It was pretty good. There's supposed to be some type of afternoon snack later. Yum? I shaved last night, but not very well because you could either get hot water or cold water--nothing in between. I will have a proper shave when I am home. I have reached page 197 in my book that I am reading, I can think of no more to say at this point so I will go to sleep now.

The End.

12.20.2008

12:37

So after Warwick, we went back to the Methodist Central hall. We had a little dress rehearsal kinda thing, with an inspirational speech from Sarah, with a fart from Colin right in the middle of the most important part. It was funny, but Sarah was pretty pissed. I had a feeling the concert would go well. Then we went downstairs to the ahll kinda place where they served us jacket potatoes. I had two delicious ones with butter and salt and cheese. Mmm. We had ice cream for desert. I'm definitley looking forward to going home and having some nice, real dairy products. Ice cream, milk, yogurt...mmmm. It was ok, but it was no Blue Bunny. Then we went to get changed. Before the concert, we got another speech, another fart, and we headed up. We went in and sang the concert pretty much as planned. There were only about 35 people there, but whatever. It was fun. Neil had a great organ solo thing. Very powerful. They need to take the screens off the organ at church. It would just sound so much better. Oh well. I just thought it was kind of sad that the epitome of six years of choir and youth group is singing for 35 people. Not exactly climactic. "Whatever," though, as Micheal would say, "I make it rain." And raining it is, in fact. After the concert, we ran into the chapel and had a lot of chaos as we changed and stuff. Then we got on the bus and settled in and jammed and everybody sang the whole times. It was a lot of fun. As we neared the hostel, everyone got everything together and took the hike to it. We all went to our rooms, some of us after some [illegible, looks like "intermetry"?], and got everything ready for tomorrow. We'll have to get up around 5 and be out by 6, I guess we have an early flight. We're due to have a 5 hour layover in Chicago and then be home around 7:00. It'll be nice.

My Philosophy on Procrastination

I am not one of those people who slacks off by playing video games. When I'm not working on what I should be doing, I am reading about something else that interests me or watching something culturally stimulating...not just sitting around. I don't want to sound like a snob, but that's my take on it. Which brings me here. It's 1:27 in the morning, Monday morning. I have just had 5 days off from school. Yes, I was working on my application to Indiana University a lot of the break. But in between sending emails to directors and everything else, I would read a little snippet...or the entire menu...about a new restaurant downtown or read an article in the New Yorker about a BBQ place in Texas. It's not that I'm wasting my time...I'm just putting my efforts in a place where maybe they aren't being used to their full potential. And now, I have a bunch of homework due tomorrow that I haven't done. I'm getting up at 6:15 to finish some of it. But tomorrow, I am going to see what happens if I don't do anything at all besides what is completely time efficient. We'll see what happens.

Also, I'm shaving.

Leaving Warwick.
Ah, I have a sore throat. Feels like shit. So, last night, I got a shower and stuff. Owen, Linda's son, came home with a couple mates. He had a studio in the room next to mine, and we jammed for a bit. I started playing bass, but turned it over to him, and payed the little electric drumset. It was kind of fun, but really awkward. They kept asking if I knew a bunch of stuff which I didn't-Pixies, Tenacious D, stuff like that. I managed to hack a bit of it out. Went to bed around 10:45, journaled that bit, and goe'd to sleep. I slept beautifully, like a dang baby. Emily woke me up at 7:53, with happy birthday. So that was fun. Went downstairs and had a small breakfast - yogurt, shortbread, apple crisps, and orange juice. We left the house and left an Iowa book, a card, and a couple CDs, and went back to the church place. Everybody prayed, and we got on the bus again to go to Warwick. It was pretty cool, I remembered some of it. We went in the "haunted" part, which wasn't that scary. It was kind of cool though. We played frisbee on the lawn in the courtyard, which was fun, until we got kicked off. Then we climbed the big tower -- Guy's tower, I think, and that was a nice view. 530 steps. Later we went to play frisbee somewhere else, and got juice. Then we went to see the trebuchet. There was a short lecture, during which I developed my sore throat, about the procedure and how they would have used it in battle and stuff. Then they shot it off. It was pretty cool. Except I had a sore throat. After that, a bunch of us went to get lunch at a chinese restaurant. I had spring rolls and chicken with vegetables. It was quite tasty. Then we went back to the coach, and I think we're going back to the church again. I dunno. I wanna sleep.

On the bus going to Warwick

Let me finish up about last night. So after dinner in Stratford, we went to the Methodist Central Hall or something in Coventry. There we had juice and biscuits, and met our host families or in my case, woman. I wish I had gotten a picture with her. Oh well. She was a nice old lady, about 60 or 70 something, I think. I was with Mac, Emily Taylor, and Ethan in her house. It was a nice place, with a nice garden and stuff. We chatted for a while, she showed us around, and was very generous. I got my own room, which was nice. Looks like we're about to Warwick now, so I'll finish this later on.

6/20/08 23:40

15 Kemps Green Road, Temple Ballsal

Well, I've gotten a bit behind, haven't I? Sorry. Erm...Not even going to write about the 8th. Don't remember anymore. That'll be the black hole of the trip. In the afternoon I know we went to the Hard Rock Cafe store

and Hyde Park and stuff. We played frisbee, and I threw Wesley's into the street, and Neil wouldn't let Neil go get it. We went to Pizza Express for dinner after that, which was tasty, took some artsy photographs, rode a boat, rode the subway for about three fucking hours because the chaperones are dumbshits and can't figure anything out, and went to bed. So yea, It was a pile of shit.

Yesterday was better, I think. Don't remember it in such vivid detail as some days, but it wasn't too bad. We did kind of a bus tour and stuff around London. We went to King's Cross station, and saw platform 9 3/4, where Harry Potter and his wizard friends hop through the wall. There's a cart set halfway through it and a sign above it, and you can go up and take pictures with it. Lori got one of me with my feet flying up in the air. We saw Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, or at least where it once was, and also a replica of it, which was across the river. We then crossed Millennium Bridge and hung out round St. Paul's cathedral for a bit. I got a homemade brownie "pleasure pot." Some kinda cream, toffee sauce, and a brownie. Delicious. I got a lemonade too, but it wasn't very sweet and it tasted quite [illegible]. Once we got back to the hostel in the afternoon, Neil, Patrick, and I busked for about half an hour. It was quite depressing. The only people who stopped were people with kids or people we knew who were on the trip, and we only got money from people on the trip. A couple wee kids smiled at us. :-) We made about £4 each. We were all wishing we had our own instruments. We weren't very good. After that, we went back to the West End for Wicked. Later on that night, we switched chaperones, so the green machines were with Lori now. We tried to decide where to go for dinner, and settled on going for Cornish Pasties at the Cornish Pasty shack. They were REALLY good. I need to find the recipe. It's like steak, carrots, potatoes and onions all baked in a crust. Mmm. I got a slice of ham and pineapple pizza too, but it was cold by the time I got to it. There weren't any tables to sit at in the shop, so went across the street to a little park. A drunk man and a policeman were having a discussion about where the premises of the bar the man had been at extended to. The policeman said alcohol was not allowed in the park, the man was drunk, the cop took his beer and poured it out, they chatted for a little while longer, the policeman left, and the man pulled two more beers out of his coat. :-) Wicked was...wicked. Sorry. The production was really spectacular. Even before it began, I was impressed by the set. There was a dragon up on the ceiling and gears and all kinds of stuff. The witches voices were kind of annoyingly high and screechy, but other than that, everything was great. At intermission, Patrick and I went down to have a look at the pit. It was sweet. It looked pretty crowded and stuff, but they kept themselves happy. They all had magazines and books and stuff, tons of instruments - it was all really cool. I actually talked to the bass player for a minute, which was cool. The music for the show wasn't my cup of tea exactly, but like I said, it was all very well done. Light were also really great. Just makes me sad about dinner drama...Ethan planned out a rout home on the subway after the show, so we got back a lot quicker. And then we went to bed.

This morning we packed up our stuff, had breakfast, and hit the road. We were pretty much on the road most of the day. We went to Oxford first. It was kind of boring. I know it's supposed to be important, and I respect that, but it's old, and we're not, so we'd rather not waste our time on it. [Looking back on that statement, I have realized that I sound like an ass. My apologies.] At least that's the vibe I got from most of the youth group. We shopped for a little bit, I got Dad a mug, and Mom some tea. From there, we went to Blenheim Palace, the home of the Duke of Marlborough. It was magnificent. We were all really tired though, so we didn't appreciate it all that much. Whatever, though, it was cool. There was a huge organ, and awesome grounds. Ponds, mazes, all kinds of shit. We grabbed some lunch, for me a turkey and cranberry wrap or something, and went to play ultimate. On the lawn. Of the palace belonging to the Duke of Marlborough. We played ultimate on the Duke of Marlborough's lawn. It was tight. Great game, we won. Then we were pooped. We slept on the bus ride to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. We didn't visit it, just stopped at a pub for some food. Neil had a pork chop which looked good, and I had a turkey onion sage apple sandwich. It was very tasty. We also all had smoothies. We lost track of time because we were watching a soccer game (Spain vs. Russia, Spain won, 4-1), and got back to the coach late. It wasn't a big deal though. Hell, I'm tired, I'm going to finish this tomorrow.
